The Music of Anthony Newman
While Anthony Newman is best known as America's foremost Baroque interpreter - a master organist, harpsichordist, conductor and a specialist in the performance of the music of J.S. Bach - he has, for more than forty years, composed modern works that have been performed in cities such as Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Krakow, Warsaw, New York, Singapore, and London.
Newman's composing interests are varied; he has created works for organ, piano, chamber groups, full orchestra, choir as well as operas. While Newman's style of composition is modern it is decidedly tonal. Far from the disordered and unrewarding serial atonality and other unmusical compositional schemes favored by many avant-garde composers (but few listeners), Newman's works exploit and expand upon the structural and harmonic archetypes found in music of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries as well as his own 20th century archetypes.
